Lorenzo brino 7th heaven. Level 1 LOTR orcs? Inherently evil. D&D orcs? Specifically not evil, compared to how they handle gnolls its pretty clear. level 2 LOTR orcs? Inherently evil. Just to point out that Tolkien felt very conflicted about his portrayal of Orcs as inherently and irredeemably evil after he'd already written the books, because it clashed with beliefs of earned goodness and redemption. Even in the LOTR canon there's still room to believe that Orcs could be saved or reasoned with in theory, but that the society they lived in indoctrinated them so much that doing so in practice would be next to impossible. level 2 Exactly LOTR orcs were horribly warped by dark magic for untold years. They were created by an evil deity to be evil, bloodthirsty creatures. Gnolls are the same way. It’s why there isn’t a Gnoll player race RAW. They’re naturally mindless killers. Orcs in D&D have significantly more nuance. level 2 LOTR orcs are not inherently evil. Actually that idea greatly troubled Tolkien but in his letters it is explicitly stated that they are not, by nature, evil, but rather have been largely subdued by the most evil forces within the setting. It's also necessary to mention that the books are written from an in-universe perspective with real cultural and political biases. level 2 Also LOTR orcs are goblins. level 2 Don't tell this guy about my homebrew Gnolls who are perfectly reasonable hyena people in the same way Tabaxi are cat people. level 1 Also, for a guy who apparently is well-versed in D&D lore, he apparently never read beyond the first editions. level 2 Allow me to introduce you to the tentatively peaceful Orc kingdom of Many-Arrows. level 2 Drizzt do’Urden has entered the chat. level 2 Wait... orcs can be good in 1e I'm pretty sure (at least I'm sure they can in 2e) level 2 And clearly this person has never heard of Eberron either level 2 For guys like this with "purist" attitudes, first edition is probably the One True Edition and he doesn't consider anything not personally created by Gary Gygax to be "real Dungeons & Dragons". level 2 No kidding. He'd be somewhat right in 3. 0/3. 5, when they had a chart for alignment variations. If it said 'usually' evil, there were plenty of variations. If it said 'always', there were very few members of other alignments. But they were still there. This guys just being a nutcase.

Loremasters.
