Appreciated the effort. Really wished someone looked over the script and shooting beforehand. Very messy. Appreciated the theme nevertheless.

Zombi vaikas scanorama. Although the last twenty minutes are breathless, the introduction languishes and lasts about eighty minutes. Thus, in order to appreciate the very ending, you'll have to be patient. very patient... Beginning in Haiti in the early sixties, Zombi Child" deals with voodoo and is one of the best and most poetic horror films in many a moon. It is obvious from the title and the setting that we are meant to think of a much earlier film with a similar setting but that would appear to be where the comparisons with Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie" ends for in the next scene we are in comtemporary France and a group of schoolgirls are being taught French history in a very white classroom.
What follows is a deliciously unsettling movie that manages to encompass the pains of teenage romance with a tale of the 'undead' as a metaphor for colonialism and it actually works. I can't think of too many examples in recent cinema where two opposing themes have been as beautifully united as they are here. In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.

From the living dead to the walking dead   to the typing dead, zombies have completely and utterly suffused 21st century culture. And that’s a pretty weird phenomena, when you think about it. It’s not like this was always the case. Go back to the ’80s, and to wax poetic about George Romero-esque zombie films would have been the hallmark of a nerdy, acne-ridden high school student in a John Hughes movie. The idea that a TV show like The Walking Dead could be one-upping Sunday Night football in TV ratings? That would seem patently impossible. Yes, zombies have come a long way, as has our appreciation for them. We live in a society that has become profoundly geekier in the last 15 years, and adopted the once secretive and insular totems of geek culture as its own. But it’s not just us who has evolved, it’s the zombies themselves—the creatures, their films and the people who made them. Recognizing that evolution, I decided to chart a crude history of zombie cinema by examining the most significant films in the genre from a standpoint of influence. Most of these are considered classics, although some aren’t very widely known. Most are also considered “good films, ” but they aren’t necessarily GREAT—they’re just important, for one reason or another. And of course, there’s also a few real pieces of trash on the list because hey—there’s been a lot of terrible zombie movies over the years. So here you go: The 25 most influential zombie films ever made. White Zombie, 1932 Where else could we begin? White Zombie was the first feature-length “zombie” horror film, and the first popularization of the Hollywood   concept of Haitian voodoo zombies, decades before the modern George Romero ghoul. As a public domain staple in just about any cheapo package of zombie films ever assembled, it’s easy to view White Zombie today—you can simply breeze through its 67-minute runtime on YouTube, if you want. Bela Lugosi, only a year removed from Dracula and reveling in his celebrity as one of Universal’s go-to horror performers, plays a witch doctor who   is literally named “Murder, ” because the studio was still a few years away from discovering subtlety at this point. The Svengali-like Lugosi ends up using his various potions and powders to zombify a young woman who is engaged to be married, attempting to bend her to the will of a cruel plantation owner, and … well, it’s pretty dry, wooden stuff. Lugosi, predictably, is the one bright spot, but you had to start somewhere. After White Zombie, voodoo zombie flicks popped up occasionally in Hollywood   for years, most of which are currently in the public domain today. And of course, the film also inspired a certain musical project from Rob Zombie. I Walked With a Zombie, 1943 I Walked With a Zombie is the second film overseen at RKO by producer Val Lawton, who produced a memorable run of low-budget but artful horror flicks in the early ’40s that included the likes of Cat People and The Ghost Ship. Far more atmospheric and less hokey than White Zombie, this film is a good example in general of the Hollywood   system’s refinement from the early ’30s to early ’40s, even with its low budget. The story revolves around a young nurse who travels to the Caribbean to care for a patient who may or may not be affected by zombism, which draws her into a mystery surrounding a local voodoo cult. The cult’s zombie enforcer, Carre-Four, seen in the above photo, is one of the most iconic early images of a voodoo zombie, rocking the cliche “monster carry” pose of an unconscious woman. If only he was actually in the film more, it might be considered as a real classic today, but it’s still about as good as the voodoo zombie films of this time period get. There are some really spectacular individual shots in this film that chillingly play with intense shadows and the towering Carre-Four’s gaunt frame. The Plague of the Zombies, 1966 Revivals of the classic Universal monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy) were the main forte of Hammer Horror, but the British studio also managed to produce one great, influential zombie movie that has flown pretty much under the radar in the decades since its release. Plague of the Zombies does feature voodoo zombies, but they’re not quite the same as those early B&W examples. Decayed-looking and truly frightful, with a fantastic design aesthetic, they feel like a true bridge to the Romero ghoul, and the visual influence on Night of the Living Dead is pretty obvious. Featuring great production design and a spooky story about a town slowly dying to a plague of zombism, it’s my personal favorite pre-Romero zombie film, and one that deserves a significantly larger audience. With its glorious Technicolor imagery, it fits in comfortably alongside the better-known Hammer classics from Terence Fisher. You can also include visually similar films such as Vincent Price’s The Last Man on Earth as Romero-influencers, but the creatures in that film are much closer to vampires than they are zombies. Night of the Living Dead, 1968 What more can be said of Night of the Living Dead? It’s pretty obviously the most important zombie film ever made, and hugely influential as an independent film as well. George Romero’s cheap but momentous movie was a quantum leap forward in what the word “zombie” meant in pop culture, despite the fact that the word “zombie” is never actually uttered in it. More importantly, it established all of the genre rules: Zombies are reanimated corpses. Zombies are compelled to eat the flesh of the living. Zombies are unthinking, tireless and impervious to injury. The only way to kill a zombie is to destroy the brain. Those rules essentially categorize every single zombie movie from here on out—either the film features “Romero-style zombies, ” or it tweaks with the formula and is ultimately noted for how it differs from the Romero expectation. It’s essentially the horror equivalent of what Tolkien did for the idea of high fantasy “races. ” After The Lord of the Rings, it became nearly impossible to write contrarian concepts of what elves, dwarves or orcs might be like. Romero’s impact on zombies is of that exact same caliber. There hasn’t been a zombie movie made in the last 47 years that hasn’t been influenced by it in some way. Oh, and by the way— NOTLD is public domain, so don’t get tricked into buying it on a cheap DVD. Shock Waves, 1977 Despite the influence of NOTLD, the film took some time to gestate in the cultural consciousness before a huge wave of significant zombie movies bloomed in the late ’70s and especially the ’80s. Arriving shortly before Dawn of the Dead exponentially raised the popularity of zombies as horror antagonists, Shock Waves might very well be the first of all the “Nazi zombie” flicks. It’s honestly a dreary, slow-paced film, following a group of lost boaters who end up on a mysterious island where a sunken SS submarine has jettisoned its crew of zombies, a Nazi experiment. Hammer Horror icon Peter Cushing appears as a badly miscast and addled-looking SS Commander, the same year he was sneering at Princess Leia in Star Wars: A New Hope. There have been, by my amateur count, at least 16 Nazi zombie movies since this point—certainly more than one might realize—which makes this one fairly significant at least for combining the portmanteau of great film villains first. Films like the Dead Snow series ultimately owe it all to Shock Waves. Dawn of the Dead, 1978 Where Night of the Living Dead is rough, fuzzy and decidedly cheap-looking, Dawn of the Dead makes a giant leap forward in terms of presentation, professionalism, thematic complexity and groundbreaking special effects. It took Romero 10 years to get his first sequel off the ground, but he ups the ante in every way possible. The plot is more engaging and smartly satirical, with anti-consumerism themes that become apparent as a crew of survivors hole up in a tacky mall overrun by the walking dead. Special effects wizard Tom Savini turns in his first really great adventure in gory experimentation, raising the bar for everyone else who ever wanted to explode a zombie head on screen in the years to come. Dawn is often cited as the all-time greatest zombie film via lists, which may or may not be true, but it’s definitely near the top in terms of iconic status. The violence is rather gleeful, but the sobering reality of the collapse of civilization contains a nihilistic streak common to zombie apocalypse films from here on out. Even more than NOTLD, this film sets a specific tone that future zombie films attempted to either duplicate or subvert. Zombi 2, 1979 In the ’70s and ’80s, it was hard to beat Italy in terms of fucked-up horror movie content, and given that market’s fondness for the “cannibal film, ” is it any surprise they also came to love the zombie genre as well? Zombi 2 is the greatest of all the Italian zombie movies, intended as essentially a direct follow-up (thematically, not plot-wise) to Dawn of the Dead, which had been released in Italy to great success under the title Zombi. Helmed by Italian giallo /supernatural horror maestro Lucio Fulci, Zombi 2 significantly ups the crazy factor and pushed gore to a new ceiling. The effects and makeup on this film are absolutely disgusting, and it’s filled with iconic moments that have transcended the horror genre. Scene of someone having an eye poked out? Always compared to the eye-poking scene in Zombi 2. Scene where a zombie fights a freaking SHARK? Well, nobody compares that because nobody has the balls to try and one-up Zombi 2 ’s zombie shark-fighting scene. That’s one contribution that will stand the test of time forever. City of the Living Dead, 1980 Lucio Fulci followed up Zombi 2 with City of the Living Dead the next year, a film that sounds like it could be more of the same but is instead a more ambitious and artistic project than the straight-up fan service of Zombi 2. Fulci doesn’t even quite hold himself to using the same kinds of creatures he used in his film a year earlier—rather than Romero zombies, these are almost like demonically empowered corpses driven up from the earth by the opening of “the gates of hell. ” It’s a bit of a confusing, sprawling mythology, and a story that rambles from New York City to the seaside, Lovecraftian-named town of Dunwich. Plot is almost never a strength in these types of Italian horror flicks—the best of them become very memorable for their lurid combination of stylish color, surreal, hammy performances and shocking gore. Those are all the things that City of the Living Dead does well, like any of Fulci’s best movies, and it showcases a unique midpoint between the science-based Romero ghoul and a supernatural revenant. Hell of the Living Dead, 1981 Okay, where the preceding film and Zombi 2 are examples of fairly well-regarded Italian zombie movies, Hell of the Living Dead is right near the bottom of the barrel. It’s a rather loathsome, grimy movie that is often in poor taste and is so opaque in its plotting that you’ll often have difficulty determining what, if anything, is happening in the story. Style-wise, the film is like a bridge between the classic zombie film and the Italian “cannibal natives in the jungle” horror genre, in the same vein as Cannibal Holocaust. Thus, it encourages all of the worst excesses of that style—Random, pervasive nudity, casual racism and tons of stock footage, some of it of real-life human tragedy. Director Bruno Mattei was an exploitation guru who has occasionally been compared to Ed Wood within the Italian filmmaking market, and the film also manages to feature some sequences directed by Claudio Fragasso, who went on to produce Troll 2 in America, one of the greatest “fun-bad” movies of all time. Hell of the Living Dead, though, is a dreary affair only notable for some decent makeup effects. It did, however, have an unfortunate influence in pushing the Italian zombie genre further down this rabbit hole of excesses and perversity, while the quality of the films decreased. Zombie movies are ultimately a cycle—they go up, they go down. Day of the Dead, 1985 Although Dawn will probably always have more esteem, Day of the Dead is my personal favorite of George Romero’s zombie films, and it might be my favorite overall zombie movie, period. It comes along at a sort of sweet spot—bigger budget, more ambitious ideas and Tom Savini at the zenith of his powers as a practical effects artist. The human characters this time are scientists and military living in an underground bunker, which for the first time in the series gives us a wider view of what’s been going on since the dead rose. This film reintroduces the science back into zombie flicks, finally making one of the main characters a scientist (Matthew “Frankenstein” Logan) who has had some time to study the zombies in the relative safety of a lab. As such, the movie redefines the attributes of the classic Romero ghoul—they’re dumb, but not entirely unintelligent, and some of them can even be trained to use tools and possibly remember certain aspects of their previous lives. That of course brings us to “Bub, ” maybe the single most iconic zombie in Romero’s oeuvre, who displays a unique level of personality and even humor. Day of the Dead ultimately takes a monster that audiences thought they knew pretty well at this point and suggests that perhaps they were only just scratching the surface on zombies’ potential. Re-Animator, 1985 Day of the Dead brought a science aspect to reanimated corpses, but Re-Animator revels in it. This is the best kind of pulpy science, the stuff that one would have found in the pages of Weird Tales in the heyday of H. P. Lovecraft. And indeed, Re-Animator is a modernized Lovecraft adaptation from a 1921 story, still perhaps the best adaptation made from one of his pieces of short fiction. Jeffrey Combs shines in a wonderfully manic, campy portrayal of mad scientist Herbert West, who brings the dead back to life via syringes of glowing green ooze. Only problem? They freak out immediately after coming back to life and try to murder everything around them, which naturally doesn’t stop West from trying over and over and over again in the film’s lesser sequels. Re-Animator contains a streak of the black humor that would begin appearing regularly in zombie films from this point onward, even though its gore and scenes of violence are quite horrific as well. It feels like a reaction by forward-thinking director Stuart Gordon to genre fans who had started becoming desensitized to the staid atmosphere of sincere horror films and wanted to laugh at gory zombie violence rather than simply recoil from it. Return of the Living Dead, 1985 John Russo is a huge unknown in terms of important figures in the history of zombie cinema, at least among those who aren’t big horror geeks. Russo is the man who created the original story for Night of the Living Dead alongside George Romero, and thus is essentially one half of the driving force for the most famous zombie film of all time. After the two parted ways post NOTLD, their settlement dictated that Russo would retain the rights to any future films with the phrase “living dead” in the title. Thus, Romero’s “of the dead” monikers in future films. Russo, meanwhile, instead wrote his sequel as a novel, which as then finally adapted as a film 17 years after the original NOTLD with extensive rewrites by director Dan O’Bannon. The result is one of the all-time zombie classics, a film that is equal parts gory and hilarious while making a concerted effort to capture the youth movement, art aesthetic and especially music of the mid-’80s. It’s influential in so many different ways: the comedic tone; the youth focus; the scapegoating of an American military experiment gone wrong as the genesis of the zombies. The zombies too have been completely redesigned with all-new capabilities—they’re intelligent; they can speak; they can move fast; and for the first time ever, they’re specifically targeting human brains. That last point was so influential and so ubiquitous in the genre after 1985 that it’s incorrectly been assumed by many people for decades that the Romero zombies are brain-eaters. For these reasons, ROTLD is undoubtedly one of the most significant zombie films ever. Night of the Creeps, 1986 Night of the Creeps feels like a bastard child of both ROTLD (primarily) and Re-Animator tangentially, but it’s honestly a weirder film than either, and that’s saying something. Haphazardly blending sci-fi with horror-comedy, it’s about an invasion of parasitic alien slugs that turn their hosts into superpowered zombies. Directed by Fred Dekker, who would go on to helm the much more family-friendly Monster Squad a year later (which strangely enough, doesn’t have any zombies), it’s a risque, rather tawdry horror film set a college, and thus often feels like some kind of zombified twist of Animal House. Like ROTLD, its inherent ’80s-ness is absolutely off the charts, but it has more of a science-y, lab-based feel thanks to the presence of aliens and a presumed plot to take over the world. In this way, it’s like the zombies were used to make the kind of ’50s-style B-movie that otherwise would have starred alien invaders. They took the monster of the decade, zombies, and substituted them into an earlier style of film, ramped up the sexualization and rock ’n’ roll, and a cult classic was born. Evil Dead 2, 1987 The obvious question to answer here is not whether Evil Dead 2 is great or whether it’s influential, but if it qualifies as a “zombie movie, ” per se. The deadite antagonists are magically or demonically empowered—their bodies are inhabited, whether they’re alive or dead. The fact that many of them are reanimated corpses, though, makes me say it’s close enough—you can call them “zombies, ” at least on some level, and the rural farmhouse location is almost exactly the same as in NOTLD. The film is essentially a remake of the first 1981 Evil Dead; Sam Raimi   going back to an idea he clearly enjoyed with a bigger budget and more experience to “get it right” and up the ante. There are some tweaks—Ash goes from being almost a “final girl” character to a much more capable, wisecracking one right from the get-go, and significantly more of the film features him in a tour-de-force solo performance, which helps make Evil Dead 2 one of the best, most tightly paced horror comedies ever. It just wastes no time, going straight into the insanity and comic violence within the first 10 minutes and never letting up ever again. It’s a film indicative of the changing attitude toward zombies—at this point in the late ‘80s it’s becoming rare that zombies are ever treated as simply “scary. ” More and more frequently, they’re instead incorporated into madcap comedies and action films ‘ala Evil Dead, and this is a trend that continued through the ‘90s. The Serpent and the Rainbow, 1988 You can thank Wes Craven for an unexpected revival of the voodoo-style Haitian zombie in 1988’s The Serpent and the Rainbow, an unusual film based on the real-life accounts of an ethnobotanist who studied the roots of the zombie legend and the various potions and powders supposedly used to create “zombies” in Haiti. These are beliefs still accepted on some level in various communities today, but the film itself is far from grounded, and ventures into a rather outlandish caricature of voodoo beliefs. It makes for some memorable imagery—victims being buried alive, waking up screaming; voodoo magic causing scorpions to materialize inside your throat; a man’s scrotum being nailed to a chair. Wish I was joking on that last one, but I’m not. The Serpent and the Rainbow is a pretty effective reminder of why films such as I Walked With a Zombie freaked people out so effectively more than 40 years earlier. Next: Zombies of the ’90s and beyond Braindead, aka Dead Alive, 1992 If you’ve ever wondered to yourself about the record holder for “bloodiest film ever made, ” then Dead Alive at least has to be in the conversation. A New Zealand horror-comedy by eventual Lord of the Rings helmer Peter Jackson, it’s basically the Evil Dead 2 formula taken as far and as lurid as it could possibly go. A bite from a “Sumatran rat monkey” turns the protagonist’s mother into a mutating zombie, and things simply snowball from there as various visitors and townspeople are infected and turn into rampaging beasts who have to be dispatched via absurd, comedic ultraviolence. This is not a film for the squeamish or faint of heart, even though the gore is presented in a way meant to simultaneously elicit laughs and “ewwwss. ” Released in its native country as Braindead and as Dead Alive in the United States, this can be considered one of the crowning achievements of the gross-out zombie comedy. Practical effects just don’t get any ickier, slimier or bloodier than this, especially in the epic, iconic final confrontation between the hero, a room full of zombies and a remarkably gore-resistant lawnmower. How that lawnmower keeps functioning when choked with 1, 000 gallons of blood, I’ll never know. Cemetery Man, 1994 Zombies, and really the horror genre in general, went through something of a lull in the 1990s, outside of genre-savvy offerings like Scream. In Europe, though, unconventional zombie films did still pop up now and then, of which Cemetery Man is the most notable. The premise itself sounds old-school and spooky: A cemetery caretaker lives with his Igor-like assistant and kills the zombies that occasionally rise after being buried for 7 days. In reality, though, the film is essentially a horror art-comedy, an experimental and partially plotless, dreamy movie about the protagonist drifting through life without purpose and questioning why he bothers carrying out his duty. He pines after a woman who he immediately loses to zombification, and there are elements that almost remind one of American Psycho in the hopelessness and lack of identity he faces—even when the protagonist tries to commit atrocities and get caught, nobody seems to notice or care. It has the artistic flair and painterly quality of the earlier Italian films on this list, while incorporating some of the humor one might find in Re-Animator … but it’s moodier and more taciturn. It’s a film that tries to do many things at once, and is worth watching if only to shake your head consider the versatility of zombies, from simple flesh-eaters to complex symbols of entropy and nihilism. 28 Days Later, 2002 The classical zombie film was effectively dead by the time 28 Days Later came along in 2002 and completely reanimated the concept. And YES, we all know that the “infected” in this film aren’t technically zombies, so PLEASE don’t feel that you have to remind us of this in the comments. The definition of “zombies” is fluid, and always expanding. Here, they’re living rather than dead, poor souls infected by the “rage virus” that makes them run amok, tearing through whatever living thing they see. It’s a modernization of the same fears that powered Romero’s ghouls; unthinking assailants who will stop at nothing and are now more dangerous than ever because they move at a full-on sprint. It’s hard to overstate how big a quantum leap that mobility was for the zombie genre—the early scenes of 28 Days Later where Cillian Murphy   is trying to navigate a deserted London in hospital scrubs and is being chased by fast-moving zombies did for this genre what Scream did for the slasher revival, sans the humor. Indeed, 28 days Later is a dead-serious horror film, and also marked a return to seeing these types of creatures as a legitimate, frightening threat. It’s indicative of another trend of the 2000s, which was to reimagine the classic rules of zombie cinema to fit the needs of the film. The Zack Snyder   Dawn of the Dead remake replicated a lot of this film’s DNA when it was released two years later, although it marries the concept with the more traditional Romero ghoul. Shaun of the Dead, 2004 Together, 28 Days Later and Shaun of the Dead established precedents for the “modern” zombie film that have more or less continued to this day. The former made “zombies” scary again, and the latter showed that the cultural zeitgeist of zombiedom (which was picking up around this point) could be mined for huge laughs as well. Most importantly, the two types of films could exist side by side. Shaun of the Dead makes a wry, totally valid criticism of modern, digital, white-collar life through its wonderful build-up and tracking shots, which show slacker Shaun wandering his neighborhood failing to even realize that a zombie apocalypse has happened. Once he and his oaf of a friend finally realize what’s happening and take up arms to protect their friends and loved ones, the film becomes a fast-paced, funny and surprisingly emotional action-comedy. Few horror comedies have actually combined the elements of humor and serious horror the way this one does in certain scenes—just go back and watch the part where David is dragged through the window of The Winchester by zombies and literally torn to pieces. It’s a film that works on so many levels, and manages to be uproariously funny while still being quite faithful to the fidelity of Romero-style zombies. Much in the same way as Zombieland (a definite spiritual successor), it shows that whether the zombies are “scary” is ultimately a matter of how everyone reacts to them. By the way—the only reason that Zombieland isn’t on the list is that I feel Shaun of the Dead encapsulates everything significant about it already. Same with Fido, a film that seems based entirely on the “domesticated zombie” gag at the end of this film. Mulberry Street, 2006 Zombies are natural bedfellows with low-budget horror and have been ever since NOTLD. It’s simply not that expensive to apply zombie makeup and have an actor chew on some fake guts. Likewise with the found footage genre—ever since Paranormal Activity and Romero’s own Diary of the Dead in 2007, there have been dozens if not hundreds of cheap, found-footage zombie films. Mulberry Street, on the other hand, doesn’t lean on the found footage crutch, but it does look exceedingly low-budget. Still, this first feature film of capable young horror director Jim Mickle ( Stake Land, We Are What We Are) feels confident and far deeper than it has to be. Depicting what is essentially a street-level zombie epidemic in downtown Manhattan, it’s like a zombie film as made by an impoverished Robert Altman, weaving together the stories of various apartment dwellers as their lives come crashing down. There have been plenty of urban zombie movies, but this one captures the feeling of powerlessness that an “average person” would truly feel during such an event, completely cut off from any kind of information on what is happening, not to mention why it’s happening. Of every film on this list, Mulberry Street might well capture the most “realistic” zombie panic, the sort of event that must have happened prior to the beginning of the events in The Walking Dead. The only downside is that it looks like a film made for $60, 000, but in the vein of Evil Dead 2, it would be cool to see Mickle remake it one day with a real budget. REC, 2007 I mentioned above that 2007 was a breakthrough year for post- Blair Witch found-footage horror, and it wasn’t only in the U. S. that people were effectively employing that technique. The best of all the found footage zombie films is still probably REC, another film on this list that exhibits some playfulness in redetermining exactly what a “zombie” is or isn’t. The Spanish film follows a news crew as they sneak inside a quarantined building that is experiencing the breakout of what essentially appears to be a zombie plague. The fast-moving infected resemble those of 28 Days Later and are later revealed to be demonically possessed in a way that moves through bites, ably blending traditional zombie lore and religious mysticism. It’s a capable, professional-feeling film for its low budget, and there are some excellently choreographed scenes of zombie mayhem that feel all the more claustrophobic for being filmed in a limited, first-person viewpoint. Zombie horror seems to go hand-in-hand with the found footage approach more naturally than some other horror genres—perhaps it’s the fact that in the digital age, we’d all be compelled to document any such outbreak on our phones or other devices? Regardless, it’s not nearly so forced as some entries in this particular horror subgenre, and gives an excellent sense of what it might be like if you were just an average person locked in a huge apartment building filled with zombies. Deadgirl, 2008 The 2000s was a decade of taboos falling, but zombie sex is still probably a bit much for many audiences. And yet, that’s pretty much the entire central theme of Deadgirl, certainly one of the most WTF zombie films that has come along in recent memory. You have to give it to the writers—no one had really thought about the possibility of zombies with sexuality before this. Unfortunately, it’s compulsory sexuality, as the “deadgirl” character in question is discovered by a handful of teenage boys, most of whom spend the majority of the film arguing over who gets to rape her next. It wants to ask some kind of question about “what would you do? ”, but considering that one half of the options involve necrophilia, the choice doesn’t seem all that hard. The film is effectively creepy and gross, as you might imagine, and makes the list simply for suggesting an application for zombies that hadn’t been explored in this depth in the 40 years between this film and NOTLD. Like it or hate it, any and every instance of zombie sex in the future will always be compared to Deadgirl in some way. Pontypool, 2009 Pontypool is one of the most cerebral and ethereal re-imaginings of what the word “zombie” might be taken to mean, and it’s a film that I respect immensely for taking the hard road. Zombie fans (and horror fans in general) are a fickle bunch—we want things we haven’t seen before that also reflects everything in the history of the genre, which is a near-impossible task. Pontypool doesn’t bother at all with zombie convention. Rather, its antagonists, which are never called “zombies” and are occasionally referred to as “conversationalists” by director Bruce McDonald, are a criticism of 21st century humanity’s inability to truly connect and discuss pertinent, truly significant issues. There is indeed a “zombie virus” here, but it’s not transmitted through bites or blood, but by ideas, by the very English language, which has become so watered down with pleasantries and insincerity that it’s taken on a destructive life of its own. The film ultimately contains all of the gore and violence you would expect from a great indie zombie film, simply delivered in a unique way, with a distinctly new message. It’s a truly postmodern zombie film and deeply dissatisfied jab at society itself. Juan of the Dead, 2010 What is it about zombie films that compel small-time filmmakers to dream big? Juan of the Dead is billed as Cuba’s first feature-length zombie film, and it’s a remarkably confident piece of work from director Alejandro Brugues. It has some similarities with a somewhat more sober-minded Shaun of the Dead beyond the title—the main character is also a slacker with a slob of a best friend, but the tone is much more impoverished and street-level than the white-collar boredom of Shaun’s life. Juan of the Dead brings back some of the political verve to zombie cinema, with many Cubans assuming that the communist country’s zombie issues have something to do with “capitalist dissidents. ” Juan, our hero, attempts to profit off the panic and confusion by starting an enterprising small business: For a fee, he and his crew will come to your home and dispose of your zombified loved ones. Of course, it eventually spins out of control, and his family and friends get wrapped up into the military’s larger fight against the zombies. It’s a well-balanced film that hits just enough horror, comedy and emotional notes, and one that raked in plenty of independent film awards. There are individual moments that distinctly recall George Romero’s films in a way that goes beyond simple imitation to stand ably on their own. The Battery, 2012 The concept of a low-budget zombie drama is one that has become fairly common in the 2010s, likely owing to the influence of The Walking Dead and games such as The Last of Us, which treated zombies more like a set-piece to allow human drama to take shape. The Battery is an extrapolation of this format, a story about two men, a former baseball pitcher/catcher duo, traveling across the country together in the wake of a zombie apocalypse. And as for plot? That’s pretty much it. It’s a self-contained film that leans entirely on the performances of two actors, showcasing the ways that two men with vastly different personalities handle the mental strain and emotional challenges of continuing on each day and finding a reason to exist. The zombies are there, but they don’t really feel like active antagonists, as it were—they’re more like a constant roadblock and painful reminder of everything these men have lost in their former lives. It’s a film that almost mirrors the struggle of just getting out of bed in the morning to tackle another day—call the zombies your neighbors, your coworkers, etc. That’s what zombies have become today: A walking representation of 21st century ennui. Jim Vorel is Paste ’s news editor, and he remembers a time when he thought he would be one of only a few people interested in a Walking Dead TV series. You can follow him on Twitter.

Josà Watch full article on top. Wtf is this the blaire witch project or a documentary. Her mixing up and conflating refugees with migrants is the most frustrating thing ever. At the most generous interpretation of her video, she's implying that would be illegal migrants are going to take advantage of the refugee system to get into developed nations. (Again being generous, still makes her sound pretty heartless but still has more heart than the original video.) Her video is completely built on the boogeyman immigrant, someone from a developing nation hoping to leach off the systems of the developed nation or even start off illegal activity. Seriously does she realize that many people are very hesitant to immigrate into a new nation (especially to one that speaks a different language) and that there may be things going on in a country that pushes someone into immigrating and they may not be able to wait 5 whole years? But no, keep championing the European (and select Asian) good immigrants I promise nobody is going to notice the pattern.

The original BBC program Doctor Who began airing in 1963, and continued into 1989, making it the longest running sci-fi program, and indeed one of the longest of any genre in TV history. An unsuccessful attempt was made by Fox to revive it in 1996. BBC tried again in 2005, and this attempt proved successful. The program follows the adventures of a Timelord, one of a race of humanoid alien beings from the planet Galifrey. His/her name has never been revealed--he/she is known only as "The Doctor". He/she travels through time and space in a "Tardis", which stands for "Time And Relative Dimensions In Space". It is much bigger inside than outside. In his/her travels, he encounters various monsters such as the Daleks, the Cybermen, and a renegade Timelord known only as The Master (or Missy as timelords can change gender too). Several different actors have starred as the Doctor over the years. This is explained in the storyline as "regeneration". When the Doctor faces death, he/she cheats it by literally becoming a new person. The supporting cast also changes periodically

The fact that the Doctor was winning the mental battle against Morbius has literally nothing to do with what's coming on screen. It's just a symbolic representation of their histories clashing together. In the end, it's saying that the Doctor has learned more and become a stronger man, despite the fact that Morbius has lived so many other lives. I don't know why you're struggling with this one.

Now, a couple things: I) The ads on the side of the page can get a little bit… adult-themed in nature. Some of them are borderline pornographic. It’s easy enough to avoid clicking on them, but if you’re shy, they might be a little bit hard to ignore. II) Sometimes when you go to click something, like the play button, it opens another tab. I’m not exactly sure why it does this, but I always just close out of the new tab. I’ve never gotten a virus or had any trouble with it, but it can be annoying. III) Other than that,... Loading….

Fell in love with ecclston series, Tennant was fantastic, Smith was great. Capaldi I think could have been great (Capaldi could act imo) but suffered from bad scripts and now? Now I feel Dr Who is cancelled. Capaldi scripts could have at least been passable, and a great performance could help to salvage them, but I dont think the greatest actor of all time could save these scripts. This year I went to see 192 different movies in theaters, plus one rewatch. That's up from 162 in 2018, 140 in 2017, 9 in 2016, and 5 in 2015. I usually go 3 or 4 times per week, mostly on weekends. I keep track of dates/theaters/movies/ratings for fun and save all of the stubs. My ratings are what I give the movie right after seeing it, with no real 'checklist' or anything, mostly just initial thought/enjoyment/opinion. It's not meant to be taken super seriously, I'm not a professional reviewer. This is my full ranking for the year, from favorite to least-favorite, with a few small reviews/thoughts thrown in: Monos - 10/10 - Hands-down my favorite movie of the year and honestly high on my all-time list. It's Apocalypse Now meets Lord of the Flies, with some Beasts of No Nation thrown in. It builds a unique, lived-in world that's believable and brutal. Beautifully-filmed, some of the best shots of the year (the ending shot gets seared in your mind). Modern and grounded look at a militia/cartel fighting against an unnamed enemy in a Colombian jungle. It almost feels post-apocalyptic instead of 'cartel vs government', which I really loved. You get to imagine your own backstory as the story unfolds. Unforgiving and gut-wrenching, but hopeful too. Got a lot out of its cast. Can't recommend this movie enough. Really disappointed this didn't make the Best Foreign Language Film shortlist. "Masterpiece" gets thrown around a lot, but in my mind this is the only one this year. Marriage Story - 10/10 The Farewell - 10/10 Journey to a Mother's Room - 9/10 - Biggest surprise of the year, came out of nowhere. Deeply-personal story between a mother & daughter. It's very basic on the surface, and there's not much story (you start at Point A, and end at Point A), but it's the most emotional movie of the year. If you don't cry at least 3 times during this, you're probably not human. It's all about the unbreakable connection you have to your parent(s), from the day you're born until the day you die. It only takes place over the course of a few months, but feels like lifetimes. Beautiful little movie about separation, loss, and human connection. Waves - 9/10 - I could write 20 pages on how much I loved this movie. To keep it short, it's got a perfect soundtrack, perfect setting, awards-worthy performances (from Kelvin Harrison Jr., Sterling K. Brown, and Taylor Russell). Visceral story that grips you from the first minute and doesn't let go until the closing shot. Unique use of colors and aspect-ratio. It takes a huge risk structurally that pays off. It's also the only movie I went to see twice this year. Really worth it too, picked up on a lot of stuff on the second viewing. Would've went a third time if theaters kept it playing longer. Every tiny decision/action has a huge impact. Just watch this. Last Black Man In San Francisco - 9/10 Birds of Passage - 9/10 Apollo 11 - 9/10 - The best documentary of the year. Probably the best editing (and use of sound) I've ever seen/heard in a documentary. It's unique because they don't use interviews like most documentaries do, it's real sound the whole through. Impressive use of archival footage/audio. Uncut Gems - 9/10 - This movie wasn't on the Best Original Score shortlist for the 2020 Oscars. This aggression will not stand. The Mustang - 9/10 Wild Rose - 9/10 - If this doesn't win the Oscar for Best Original Song ('Glasgow'), I've lost all faith in the Academy. The ending concert scene had me crying like a baby. Jessie Buckley is gonna be big. Best music-drama since A Star Is Born. Transit - 9/10 Ad Astra - 9/10 - Top-notch acting, great atmosphere, world-building, existentialism, beautiful VFX, engaging score. Best opening scene of the year. Thoughtful commentary on modern society all wrapped in a Heart of Darkness blanket. If you're into space/exploration movies, then I recommend this. Surprised at the backlash this movie has gotten on r/movies. The Report - 9/10 - This was a really good year for legal-thrillers and The Report was the cream of the crop. Tight, Sorkin-like script with top performances from Adam Driver & Annette Bening. Could change a lot of minds about the war on terror and use of torture. Parasite - 9/10 Once Upon A Time In Hollywood - 9/10 Midnight Traveler - 9/10 - If you feel like life is unfair and the odds are stacked against you, watch this movie. It puts everything in a different perspective. Every problem you have is going to seem minuscule compared to what this family went through. It's eye-opening and should fill you with anger. Luce - 9/10 - It's Kelvin Harrison Jr's world and we're just living in it. The Irishman - 8/10 Mickey and the Bear - 8/10 - Camila Morrone puts in the best breakout performance of the year. PTSD, drug-addiction, alcoholism, rural Montana, toxic relationships, James Badge Dale, following your dreams. What's not to love? The Art of Self Defense - 8/10 - The best dark-comedy of the year. So many great one liners. It's like Yorgos Lanthimos directing Death of Stalin, set in a karate studio. Surprisingly violent and depressing, but in all the right ways. Jesse Eisenberg's best movie Social Network? Peanut Butter Falcon - 8/10 - "Am I going to die? " "We all do, it's only a matter of time, now stop being a little bitch. " - Favorite line of the year, really stuck with me. Everybody Knows - 8/10 Mary Magdalene - 8/10 Knives Out - 8/10 - Well-crafted whoddunit with an ensemble cast. Just a genuinely fun time at the movies. Ana de Armas with well-deserved leading role for once. A few of the characters are a tad bit unrealistic (and basically caricatures), but the movie doesn't take itself seriously enough for that to be a problem. Daniel Craig hamming it up with a Southern accent was fun. Old school film with a modern twist. The Lighthouse - 8/10 The Dead Don't Die - 8/10 - This movie really isn't for everyone, but I loved the dry humor and purposefully-bad chemistry/dialogue. The line delivery was off-putting but hilarious. Everything is extremely on-the-nose and it works. I could watch 10 hours of Tom Waits talking to himself. Us - 8/10 Villains - 8/10 Ford v Ferrari - 8/10 Midsommar - 8/10 Jojo Rabbit - 8/10 Official Secrets - 8/10 - Keira Knightley with one of the most underrated performances of the year. Another really good legal/political-thriller that exposes the dark side of government bureaucracy. Pain & Glory - 8/10 John Wick 3: Parabellum - 8/10 Queen & Slim - 8/10 Amazing Grace - 8/10 - Great concert-documentary. Some of Aretha Franklin's performances in this should give you insane chills. I actually had this one rated higher right after watching it, but then looked up some of the people shown on screen and it turns out some were real pieces of shit, while preaching to people like hypocrits. Felt gross and took a lot of the magic out. One of my few revised scores this year. A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood - 8/10 Joker - 8/10 Non-Fiction - 8/10 - It's very French (talky and sexual) and the writing seems impressed with itself, but it's a good adult-drama that surprised me. I'm a big fan of Olivier Assayas and this is some of his best work. Rocketman - 8/10 Stan & Ollie - 8/10 Hustlers - 8/10 Avengers Endgame - 8/10 Doctor Sleep - 8/10 - It gets bloated and probably needed to be 20-30 minutes shorter (there's a shit ton of side-characters), but it was a worthwhile sequel to The Shining. Didn't feel like a cash grab and carries its own weight. Booksmart - 8/10 Little Monsters - 8/10 - I'd recommend watching this based just on Josh Gad's character. So over-the-top and hilarious. When he starts chugging hand sanitizer might be the most I laughed in a theater this year. Also Lupita Nyong'o playing & singing on the ukulele to a bunch of kids is exactly what I needed in my life. Cute zombie-comedy with a ton of heart. Spider-Man: Far From Home - 8/10 A Hidden Life - 8/10 - If there's a song from this year (or this decade even) that I'd want played at my funeral, it's James Newton Howard's theme from this movie. It's so beautiful and perfectly captures the feel of the movie. That song broke me down every time it played. I can't imagine this movie without it, it's that good. It's a shame this movie is getting ignored this awards season. Never Look Away - 8/10 Toy Story 4 - 8/10 Pavarotti - 8/10 The Biggest Little Farm - 8/10 - If you're really into the inner-workings of a Californian farm, then this is the documentary for you. Abominable - 8/10 The Current War - 7/10 Artic - 7/10 - Well made, solidly-acted. I loved the small details about survival that this movie brings up, makes it very grounded and realistic. I'm kinda bored of survival movies in general so this didn't blow my mind or anything. Bombshell - 7/10 Honey Boy - 7/10 - Pretty big letdown because I had really high expectations for this one. Lacked the emotional punch I hoped for. Didn't land for me at all, kind of like Boy Erased last year. I appreciate how honest and revealing it was, took a lot of guts for Shia LaBeouf to put this out there but it's forgettable. Lucas Hedges' Shia impression was reallllly on point though, that was worth the price of admission right there. Mid90s last year was a 10/10 for me and I expected the same for this. It was good, not great. American Woman - 7/10 - Sienna Miller's performance in this is awards-worthy. The accent she does is perfect and it might be the most underrated role of the year. The movie gets way too tearjerky at the end though. It's basically 2 hours of bad shit happening to a good person, which gets a bit overwhelming. The Beach Bum - 7/10 Captain Marvel - 7/10 Spies In Disguise - 7/10 - Looked pretty generic based on the trailer, but was actually pretty funny. Cold Pursuit - 7/10 Tolkien - 7/10 - Not much happens but it felt really comfortable. Solid performances all around and they handled the WW1 scenes better than I thought they would. Expected to be bored out of my mind based on the reviews and trailer but it flowed well. As far as "Nicholas Hoult Biopics of Famous Writers" go, it's miles ahead of Rebel in the Rye 2 years ago. Jumanji: The Next Level - 7/10 Sauvage/Wild - 7/10 Detective Pikachu - 7/10 Maiden - 7/10 Dark Waters - 7/10 -. Good performances and an okay script, even though it beats you over the head sometimes. Total waste of Anne Hathaway. She's way too good of an actress for a boring, generic, 'supporting wife' role with just a few lines. Not even sure why she was in this. Overall, a solid legal-thriller, which is a genre I really enjoy and I've been missing since its late-90s heyday. Pretty crazy story too, scummy and evil corporate greed is always interesting to explore on film (like The Insider). Should've been 20 minutes shorter and less on-the-nose Adopt A Highway - 7/10 The Wedding Guest - 7/10 The Hummingbird Project - 7/10 Motherless Brooklyn - 7/10 The Lion King - 7/10 Last Christmas - 7/10 - It's really easy to bash this movie, a lot of the humor falls flat and the twist is ridiculous, but I couldn't help walking out with a smile. I love how committed Emilia Clarke was to the character, and her interactions with her boss and family were legitimately heart-warming at times. Also did I mention how ridiculous that twist is? Richard Jewell - 7/10 - This was decent. Even though it's clearly Clint Eastwood's personal crusade (and thinly-veiled propaganda piece in some regards) against the FBI & the Spooky Media™, it still told the story effectively/semi-believably. Some of the characters (Hamm/Wilde obviously) were pretty ridiculous caricatures though, was hard to take anything they said seriously, I mean come on. You just roll your eyes at most of what they say. Some of the situations and encounters are too-conveniently set-up but that's easy to overlook. It had very solid performances (Hauser was great, especially when he finally let's his emotion show, in that scene where he kicks the table). Much better than The Mule, and 20x better than 15:17 To Paris. Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker - 7/10 21 Bridges - 7/10 Before You Know It - 7/10 Hobbs & Shaw - 7/10 - This is peak "Stupid Summer Popcorn Movie" and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's The Meg of 2019. Fighting With My Family - 7/10 Pet Sematary - 7/10 Downton Abbey - 7/10 - Never saw a single episode of the show before watching the movie, but it still felt familiar/safe to jump right in. Yesterday - 7/10 Greta - 7/10 - It's a cheesy, predictable, non-scary horror film but I liked it. Sometimes you just need Isabelle Hupert to play a psychopathic serial killer. Felt very old-school, a movie straight out of the 1980s. Judy - 7/10 - It's the definition of Oscar bait and is emotionally manipulative, especially towards the end, but it does a great job at humanizing a Hollywood legend. Frozen 2 - 7/10 Aladdin - 7/10 The Souvenir - 7/10 Zombieland 2: Double Tap - 7/10 - Nowhere near as memorable/iconic as the first one, but it still got a bunch of laughs from me (especially the Thomas Middleditch/Luke Wilson scene). Above-average for a comedy-sequel, but I could see this one not aging well. The Two Popes - 6/10 - Two solid performances but underwhelming overall, too many cheap-looking flashback scenes, not enough Pryce/Hopkins. Reminded me of Can You Ever Forgive Me? last year, depending on the 2 leads to carry a weak movie/premise on their back, to disappointing results. Highly-overrated movie. Ready Or Not - 6/10 Anna - 6/10 - It's basically Red Sparrow but slightly worse. Saint Frances - 6/10 Hotel Mumbai - 6/10 Shazam! - 6/10 - Low-stakes, formulaic, superhero movie clearly made with strict budget limitations. It hits all the notes you'd expect a movie like this to hit. It was decent. Alita: Battle Angel - 6/10 Loro - 6/10 - One of the more disappointing movies of the year. On paper it sounds amazing, a sprawling biopic of an infamous/corrupt Italian politician/mogul by Paolo Sorrentino who's not that far removed from a masterpiece? Sign me the fuck up. But nah, this was a shallow, surface-level (like my reviews), pointless dull knife of a biopic. Too much shoehorned religious imagery too. Tone is all over the place. It can't decide whether it's serious or funny and gets lost in-between. It looked nice at least. It also wins this year's "Most Nudity" award, easily beating the rest of the field. Teen Spirit - 6/10 The Upside - 6/10 Gloria Bell - 6/10 - Great performance from Julianne Moore but this just felt like "Middle-Aged Crisis: The Movie". Just couldn't connect to it. I imagine the original is a lot better. On The Basis Of Sex - 6/10 Stockholm - 6/10 Give Me Liberty - 6/10 - This is an example of a movie that has its heart in the right place but bites off a lot more than it can chew. There's a beautiful, emotional story in here somewhere, but it's too muddled with ineffective editing tricks and too many side-stories. It's sweet in some ways and the true-life characters bring a lot of charm, but it didn't do that much for me. A lot of 'year-end' lists have this as one of the most overlooked movies of the year, but I don't see it. Rough editing, bad soundtrack. Child's Play - 6/10 Good Boys - 6/10 - Just watch Booksmart instead. Styx - 6/10 Woman at War - 6/10 The Lego Movie 2 - 6/10 Missing Link - 6/10 Long Shot - 6/10 - The chemistry between Charlize Theron & Seth Rogen was great but the jokes couldn't really match it. It's a unique mix of politics & humor, but fell short of being an actual crowd-pleaser. Echo in the Canyon - 6/10 Cyrano, My Love - 6/10 Dora the Explorer - 6/10 Brittany Runs A Marathon - 6/10 IT: Chapter 2 - 6/10 - Way too long. Felt like a never-ending series of fetch-quests. Good CGI & acting though. Mister America - 6/10 Crawl - 6/10 Trial By Fire - 6/10 - Great performances by Laura Dern & Jack O'Connell get overshadowed by an overly-preacy script. It doesn't let the audience make up its own mind. The Third Wife - 6/10 Godzilla: King of Monsters - 5/10 - This needed less humans, more monsters. Glass - 5/10 Escape Room - 5/10 Terminator: Dark Fate - 5/10 Dumbo - 5/10 All Is True - 5/10 Brightburn - 5/10 The White Crow - 5/10 - One of those biopics where the movie doesn't do justice to the story. Reading the Wikipedia page on this guy's life, you'd except an Oscar contender. Instead it was just okay. Watch Cold War instead. It's basically this movie but better. High Life - 5/10 - Unpleasant. Where'd You Go Bernadette? - 5/10 Scary Stories to Tell Dark - 5/10 Her Smell - 5/10 - This movie made me physically nauseous. The tight, claustrophobic, haze-filled shots in the first 2 acts really threw me off. It's temporarily redeemed by a reallllllly good third act and a solid performance from Elisabeth Moss. But then deflated by a terrible final scene. By the Grace of God - 5/10 - Based on the critical acclaim, director, and subject matter, I walked in expected to be blown away. Basically expected Spotlight, but this movie completely derails at the halfway point. Hard to sit through. Blinded by the Light - 5/10 The Best of Enemies - 5/10 The Aeronauts - 5/10 - This is mis-marketed as an intense survival story but it's really just a boring biopic with too many flashbacks. Fall of the American Empire - 5/10 Family - 5/10 The Goldfinch - 5/10 - It turns out an unfilmable novel really is unfilmbable, who would've thought? Shoutout to Jeffrey Wright & Finn Wolfhard for actually trying. Angel Has Fallen - 5/10 Gemini Man - 5/10 Late Night - 5/10 Black and Blue - 5/10 Diane - 5/10 - This was just depression-porn. Sometimes it works (Mungiu/Zvyagintsev), sometimes it doesn't (this movie). It's such a bummer. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone but Mary Kay Place's performance makes it watchable and engaging sometimes. Destroyer - 5/10 How To Train Your Dragon 3 - 5/10 Rafiki - 5/10 - I feel bad for this score because I get that this is a really important/significant movie for African Cinema, but I just couldn't get past the terrible acting, bad (like baaaaaad) dialogue, and lackluster story. Again, pretty big achievement that this got made and reached a global audience, but yeah, in a vacuum, it's undoubtedly a bad movie. Felt like an amateur movie on a shoestring budget. Captive State - 4/10 Wild Nights With Emily - 4/10 - This movie is what happens when someone asks the question "hey, what if we turned Emily Dickinson's life into an SNL skit? ". I get what they were going for, and Molly Shannon is great, but this was extremely unfunny and probably the longest 84-minute movie I've ever seen. Dark Pheonix - 4/10 The Addams Family - 4/10 Midway - 4/10 To Dust - 4/10 Rojo - 4/10 - The only memorable thing about this movie is that there was a power outage about 90 minutes in so they comped my ticket and gave me a free drink. So that was cool, I guess. The Kid Who Would Be King - 4/10 MIB: International - 4/10 The Kid - 4/10 - There's a 98% chance that this movie is some kind of tax write-off or money laundering scheme. It somehow got 2 big names (Pratt & Hawke), co-starring the son of the producer in his first movie ever. Directed by Vincent D'Onofrio for some reason (??? ). Was dumped by Lionsgate in a few hundred theaters with 0 marketing/promotion, and flopped hard. It's dated, boring, and unoriginal. Cheesy dialogue. Literally a story that's been told a million times before, usually in much better ways. No reason for this to exist. Chris Pratt has the worst fake-movie-beard of all time in this, that's kinda worth checking out. Ramen Shop - 4/10 The Good Liar - 4/10 - The most convoluted, needlessly-complicated plot of the year. Helen Mirren & Ian McKellen both phone it in (I don't blame them, they were given trash to work with). I hate when movies try to crowbar "WW2 flashbacks" into their movies when it's not needed. Climax - 4/10 Harriet - 4/10 Lucy in the Sky - 4/10 - Once or twice a year, a movie comes along that has such a frustrating/stupid/anti-climactic ending it makes me actually angry. This is that movie. Natalie Portman had another movie like that last year (Vox Lux). Hey Noah Hawley, what the fuck? Freaks - 4/10 - This movie would fit well in the "Good Idea But Bad Execution" subreddit. Tel Aviv On Fire - 4/10 Ma - 4/10 Frankie - 3/10 Stuber - 3/10 Serenity - 3/10 - In a year full of batshit-crazy twists (looking at you, Last Christmas), this easily had the batshit-iest twist. It's something you actually have to experience yourself, and be fully-immersed in it, to appreciate how mind-numblingly crazy it is. How they got A-list talent for this script is a total mystery, but it probably involves of a lot of favors and cocaine. It's almost "so bad its good". Almost. I can't wait for the sequel, Free Guy, next year. Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil - 3/10 - More genocide than I expected for a live-action Disney fairy tale movie. Donnybrook - 3/10 The Photograph - 3/10 - Zzzzzzzzzz... Charlie's Angels - 3/10 Hellboy - 3/10 - This movie is like that annoying kid in middle school that tries way to hard to be edgy. It's gory and vulgar just for the sake of being gory & vulgar. It reminded me of the Predator reboot last year, had the same kind of dated/forced humor that seems to have no real target audience (except for the aforementioned middle school edgy kid I guess). Bad CGI and a boring villain. iirc it also had a lame sequel-bait ending which I hate. Happy Death Day 2U - 3/10 - The Sun Is Also A Star - 3/10 - It's filmed like a generic music video and has the emotional depth of a puddle. Don't Let Go - 3/10 The Invisibles - 3/10 Playing with Fire - 3/10 - This was just like Mark Wahlberg's Instant Family last year, except that it was worse in every imaginable way. No lie, the end-credits bloopers were by far better than anything else in the movie. It was the only time I even chuckled or felt any type of emotion. Cats - 2/10 - There's not much more I could say that already hasn't been said. Yes, it was bad. No, it wasn't the worst movie in history. For me, it was just so boring. Forgettable songs (except Beautiful Ghosts), no story/plot, nonsensical ending. Just wanted it to end. Jennifer Hudson just floating into space for no reason, Judi Dench giving me unwarranted lessons about raising cats, Ian McKellen slurping milk from a bowl, Extremely-Hairy-And-Naked-Idris-Elba, Cockroach Genocide, etc. These things all happened and we can't change them, and for us to grow as a society, we need to just move on and learn from our mistakes. Rambo: Last Blood - 2/10 The Sound of Silence - 2/10 - More like The Sound of Boredom, amirite? No but seriously, that's all I got. This movie was the closest I got to falling asleep in my seat this year. Synonyms - 2/10 Black Christmas - 2/10 - Extremely cheesy dialogue, cop-out violence, boring/predictable jump scares, low production value (bad even for a low-end Blumhouse movie), some of the worst one-liners you've ever heard, unrealistic/2D characters. Shitty ending. Wayyyyy too heavy-handed with the message. About as subtle as a flying brick to the forehead. Amateur acting, cutaway for every death, etc etc. After the Wedding - 2/10 - Overacted, muddled garbage. 47 Meters Down Uncaged - 1/10 Shaft - 1/10 - Crude, unfunny, soulless, grating, pointless. There's a million adjectives I could use to describe this reboot, and none of them are positive. This is one I'm surprised I didn't just walk out of. Probably didn't have anything better do do that day. Jexi - 1/10 - This year's worst movie. It's just the kind of movie that leaves a bad taste in your mouth, like you need to watch something else to get the stink of this one out of your mind. It was just so mean-spirited, from start to finish. Not a single joke landed, you just hated all of the characters. There are no redeeming factors. On the technical side, it was very basic, looked like a cheap music video. No memorable scenes, no good lines of dialogue, no originality in any way. None of the "cheerful"/"pick-me-up" moments earn any kind of emotional reaction. If you had a freshman high-school film student remake Her as a shitty comedy, this would be it. The fact that I paid money to see this is something I will never live down. Movies that I saw outside of theaters, not included in the list: The King - 8/10 - Netflix Paddleton - 8/10 - Netflix El Camino: A Breaking Bad Story - 8/10 - Netflix High Flying Bird - 7/10 - Netflix Dolemite Is My Name - 7/10 - Netflix Triple Frontier - 6/10 - Netflix The Boy Who Harnessed Wind - 6/10 - Netflix The Laundromat - 5/10 - Netflix The Highwaymen - 5/10 - Netflix Velvet Buzzsaw - 4/10 - Netflix Bird Box - 4/10 - Netflix Six Underground - 2/10 - Netflix Movies that I saw in theaters in 2019, but are not included in the list due to original release date: If Beale Street Could Talk - 9/10 Cold War - 9/10 Capernaum - 9/10 Mary Poppins Returns - 7/10 The Charmer - 6/10 Movies that I haven't seen yet but will see in the next few weeks: Little Women 1917 In Fabric Tremors Just Mercy Midnight Family A Million Little Pieces The Earthquake Bird American Son Portrait of A Lady On Fire Clemency Beanpole The Kingmaker The Song of Names Here is the distribution of theater visits by day of the week: Throughout the year, I've gone to 13 different theaters. 9 at major chains, and 4 at indie theaters. Here's the distribution of visits by theater: Here is the distribution of theater visits by month: Other: The longest stretch I went without going to the movies was from July 21st thru August 20th, without a single trip to the movies. Partially due to an out-of-country trip and personal stuff. During this time I "missed out" on The Kitchen, The Nightingale, Brian Banks, and Honeyland. Mostly caught up to the rest. The most theater visits in a one-week span was November 1st thru November 8th, with 8 movies that week. The most in one day was 3 movies in theaters on March 15th, 2019 ( Styx, To Dust, and Captive State). There were 26 double-headers this year (two movies in theaters during the same day, usually back-to-back). Solid year, not as many surprises as 2018 though. Going to try to break 200 in 2020. Here is last year's ranking:.

I desperately want a rewrite where she is an evil imposter and the doctor returns both rude and hilariously clever. It was a means of belittling the CIS WHITE MALE because his concerns and fears are meaningless to these people. I personally want to see the 13th rage, fight, yell, angry, impulsive, calculating, evil and lenient. Capaldis Zygon speech is the best. Still love Martha, put Ten in his place. I loved every minute of the first episode. Surely it should have been a double length pilot.
Ecclestone is perfect as the Doctor. His wolfish grin and a mixture of wisdom and insanity are very finely judged.
Some of the criticism I have read here appears to miss the point about the show. It is supposed to be fun but intelligent fun. There are elements of silliness not found in any other show but isn't a comedy. Also elements of "horror" but not graphic nasty horror. Its a rare mix. Its good to see it back.
The story wasn't a strong one but it is a good introduction to a new Doctor. I can't wait for more.
And as for the carping about Ecclestone being a northerner (following a Scotsman Sylvester McCoy and a scouser in Tom Baker after all) as the man (or TimeLord) himself said. br> "Many planets have a north.

'In the end you just get tired, tired of the struggle, tired of loosing everyone that matters to you, tired of watching everything turn to dust' UGHHH AMAZING WORK! SO HEARTBREAKING AND BEAUTIFUL I LOVE IT 😢💔. I know this season got a lot of hate. Personally I felt it had a lot of ups and downs in terms of story quality of the episodes. High highs and low lows. The high highs for me were the 03, and 06. As a white British man, it was great to see something like them. Both episodes made me cry. For me though, the best thing about this season was the companions. I loved everyone of them especially, Bradley Walsh's character, Graham.

Verification! m Edit: Thanks for the gold x2! Disclaimer: this verification/picture has nothing to do with the corona beer company. Update: this post has gotten huge! I’ll reply to everyone as I can, and will post more updates as they come. CROSSPOSTED If you can hit like and bump it so the world can be more aware, I’d appreciate it! Local time: 2/7/2020 08:08 What seems to be a military truck showed up on port? Will update here as I can. There are men in camo that are port side. 09:00 We got fresh towels! To those on the ship, just call your attendant periodically. They are washing towels every now and again and can offer fresh ones. 09:41 Interviewed with a Japanese newspaper. There are now two military trucks and 5 ambulances, all in hazmat suits - imagining more people will be taken ashore for treatment. The food situation has gotten MUCH better - we went to bed hungry and thirsty, but are actually full now. 09:57 41 new cases for a total of 61 cases on board. Lots of news crews, helicopters, and ambulances arriving. No news has been shared from Princess Cruises - we learned from the news. The help desk told us that those who have tested negative will be notified as well. 10:28 Thermometers and gloves will be delivered to every stateroom. Gloves and masks must be worn for open deck time. Temperature must be recorded at regular intervals - any temperature higher than 37. 5c must be reported. The cruise line is doing the very best that they can, and seem to have a system in place now that works. 15:29 Just woke up from a much needed nap - lunch came! Still 1-2 dozen ambulances out. Someone in our hallway was taken away. It feels a bit like the hunger games with uncertainty of who will be plucked next. Lunch is really nice today - much like the dining hall meals. Now our only issues are uncertainty and boredom, plus of course confinement and lack of exercise. 16:29 Worthy update.. I think booze is for sale? 16:58 We found out some of our aussie friends were told that they were negative. Huge relief, as they sat next to us for the two weeks of the cruise at dinner! 18:05 Japanese authorities continue to take people off the boat, with about a dozen people to go, looks like. People are getting roughly an hours notice before being removed from the boat. Situation on the boat is good - we’re still stuck to the cabins but making the most of the situation. We’ve actually been busy today with everything online! We’ve interviewed with a japanese newspaper and Chinese news site today, with an American news channel tonight/tomorrow. People have reached out to us to see if we can get supplies delivered. Y’all have been so kind and responsive, we really appreciate it! 18:30 We learned that some people were separated from their husbands today due to being tested positive. Their spouses are not allowed to join them. Wonder if those spouses are being re-tested? Our status has yet to be confirmed. 18:51 Dinner is here! Food situation remains to be great. When I catch up with replies, I’ll work on getting a photo album up. 19:35 Read on our Facebook thread that people are not being reimbursed by travel insurance due to the fact that it’s an epidemic. In one case, a news journalist reached out to an insurer asking about why they weren’t covering us - turns out, they changed their mind and covered them! Hopefully either we can get coverage, OR the cruise line does the right thing for lost wages, lost time, uncertainty, and just in general the situation that none of us can control. 19:40 41 new cases with a total of 61. This concludes the 273 originally tested. Happy to say that my wife and I are NEGATIVE! Nationality breakdown: Argentina: 1 Australia: 5 Canada: 5 Japan: 21 American: 8 Britain: 1 Quarantine official end date is Wednesday, 2/19/2020, unless further developments are made by the Japanese health ministry. The US embassy is working to get us off the boat on this date. Until then, cabin confinement will be a thing, along with visits to the open deck every day on a rotating schedule. Not everyone will get to go each day. Tomorrow, ocean view staterooms can go outside. All interior cabins have been able to see light today. Mandatory masks/gloves will be worn. The Japanese health ministry has provided us with additional doctors and medical staff to assist with the ongoing situation. We’ve been provided with even more water, and have two gallons stockpiled of bottled water. The cruise ship is well stocked, and passengers are being well taken care of. Cabin fever and keeping occupied is the major challenge for many of us, though puzzles are being handed out, origami paper, and many movies are being added. The cruise line has really come together to make the best of the situation. Broadband speeds have greatly increased, and are free. They’re also working on in-room activities to keep us occupied. A new food/beverage menu is being developed. They’ve addressed that being confined is a tough situation, and truly are making quality of life better. Balconies have been addressed - we can go out as we please, but are required to wear masks. The crew has done an amazing job through extraordinary circumstances, and Princess Cruises has really stepped to the plate today. The captain has been much more vocal today - I can’t imagine the stress that’s being put on him between the company, embassies, the Japanese government, and passengers frustrations. Tomorrow morning at about 08:00, the Diamond Princess will set sail to sea for normal marine operations (I. e, making water), and will return in the evening back to Yokohama’s daikoku cruise terminal. I’ll have more updates tomorrow - off to watch a movie with the wife! Things are good, and today, we had BACON. Our clogged arteries are happy! Next adventure starts tomorrow. 2/8/2020 Day 4 07:13 Replied to many comments/Facebook, about to interview with channel 5 in DFW. There are a couple ambulances out but from our understanding everyone was taken off who was positive last night. 08:21 First person has been taken off the ship. Just finished interviewing with Chanel 5 in DFW - will be on at 22:00 central standard time. 08:44 Noticed a few suitcases and people that look like they’re boarding - I’m thinking that these were the Japanese medical professionals that they were talking about. 08:55 The president of Princess Cruises is here in japan working to make sure the cruise remains comfortable for its passengers. A few passengers reported fevers and are being checked by medical staff - that’s what the ambulances are for. A consoling hotline has been opened for guests aboard the cruise. We will shortly set sail to perform essential marine activities off the coast of japan. We will arrive back to Yokohama on 2/9/2020, 0900. They are warning for rough seas such as the other night. Breakfast has just arrived! Looking good food wise again. In other news, we talked to some crew and asked how they were doing. They stated that they are hanging in there, but not sleeping too well due to the increased workload. It’s going to be a long two weeks for them - they’re working incredibly hard! 09:26 The princess diamond just tooted it’s horn and is now off to sea! 11:31 Deck 8 even room numbers with an ocean view window can go to the open deck now for a bit.

Absolutely brilliant show until (for me) peter capaldi. He just didn't fit the character quite right for me.

Chhapaak Theatrical release poster Directed by Meghna Gulzar Produced by Fox Star Studios Deepika Padukone Govind Singh Sandhu Meghna Gulzar Written by Atika Chohan Meghna Gulzar Starring Deepika Padukone Vikrant Massey Music by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy Cinematography Malay Prakash Edited by Nitin Baid Production company Fox Star Studios Ka Productions Mriga Films Distributed by Fox Star Studios Release date 10 January 2020 Running time 120 minutes [1] Country India Language Hindi Budget 45 crore [2] Box office est. 35 crore [3] Chhapaak ( transl.  Splash) is a 2020 Indian Hindi -language drama film directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Deepika Padukone and Meghna Gulzar in collaboration with Fox Star Studios. Based on the life of Laxmi Agarwal, it stars Padukone as an acid attack survivor, alongside Vikrant Massey. [4] The film was announced on 24 December 2018 by Padukone on her Twitter account; it marks her first production venture. Filming took place from March to June 2019 in New Delhi and Mumbai. [5] Days before the film's release, Padukone visited students who were brutalised during the 2020 JNU Attack, which led to a divided response on Twitter. A few right-wing magazines later wrongly reported that the religion of the acid thrower in the film was changed from a Muslim into a Hindu character. The film was theatrically released in India on 10 January 2020. [6] The film was allowed by the government to be exhibited without payment of taxes in the states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. [7] 8] 9] It received positive reviews from critics. [10] 11] Premise [ edit] The film is based on the real-life story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. [12] Cast [ edit] Release [ edit] On 10 December 2019, the official trailer was launched by Fox Star Studios. The film was theatrically released on 10 January 2020 in India. [15] The film was allowed by the government to be exhibited without payment of taxes in the states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. [7] 8] 9] On 7 January 2020, Padukone joined a protest-gathering at Jawaharlal Nehru University against the 2020 JNU Attack against left wing students and passage of CAA 2019. [16] 17] Bharatiya Janata Party s student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad is blamed for the attack. [18] The visit angered BJP leaders who expressed it in social media. [18] Soon enough, the hashtags BoycottChhapaak and BlockDeepika began trending in Indian Twitter with members of the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party contributing in its proliferation. [16] 19] 20] 21] In response, ISupportDeepika was floated which gained greater traction and by the end of the day, her follower count had increased significantly. [20] 22] Actor Varun Dhawan talked about similar calls for boycott of his film Dilwale, and stated that the boycott may hurt the business, so it is used as a scare tactics meant to prevent people from expressing their opinion in public. He supported Deepika in condemning the attacks stating it is wrong to not do it. [23] On 8 January, social media users criticized the filmmaker Meghna Gulzar alleging that she changed the name and religion of the characters in the film. [24] Several right-wing magazines, Swarajya and Opindia wrongly reported that the name of the attacker who was a Muslim in real life, was changed into a Hindu name "Rajesh" in the film. [18] BJP MP and Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Babul Supriyo called the change deliberate and "absolute hypocrisy. 25] BJP MP from South Delhi, Ramesh Bidhuri made calls to public for a boycott of the movie. [25] BJP MP Subramanian Swamy called it a defamation and informed legal action against the makers for this. [18] Mumbai Mirror reported that in past the filmmakers making films based on real life incidents had the liberty to change the names as well as the storyline in their films. [24] The visit to JNU by Deepika was seen by Mumbai Mirror as the reason for an aggressive stand was taken against the film. [24] These claims were debunked by the co founder of Newslaundry Abhinandan Sekhri, who had watched a special screening of the film Chhapaak in Delhi. He stated that the claims of the attacker belonging to the Hindu religion were false, since the movie showed him as a Muslim. [18] Journalist Radhika Sharma from PTI reported that Rajesh was the name of Maltis boyfriend. The acid attacker was called Bashir Khan urf Babboo in the film. [18] Advocate Aparna Bhat, who represented Agarwal in the case fought at Patiala House Courts, pursued legal action against the makers for not mentioning her in the film, to protect her identity and preserve her integrity. 26] 27] Reception [ edit] On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 86% based on 14 reviews. [28] Teo Bugbee of The New York Times reviewed that Chhapaak "succeeds in balancing extremes. It is at once a pleasing and buoyant inspirational story, and a realistic depiction of the brutal aftermath of acid attacks. 29] Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express credited the film for portraying "drama without dreaded melodrama" and highlighted Padukone's "solid, realised performance" to be its prime asset. [30] Anna tticad of first post in a mixed review wrote"The blend Massey achieves is what Chhapaak needed as a whole. Without that, what we are left with are good intentions, a heart in the right place, a major star taking a huge risk with an unorthodox role and a bunch of pluses that somehow do not come together to deliver an immersive experience. " 31] Writing for The Hindu, Namrata Joshi summarised that "Padukones performance and Meghna Gulzars direction ensure that Chhapaak is like a splash that leaves you misty with emotions, if not entirely drenched. 32] Ankur Pathak of HuffPost labelled it "a quietly powerful social commentary, a film that never allows you to be comfortable" and considered Padukone's performance to be a career best. [33] Uday Bhatia of Mint wrote that it "earnestly highlights a depressingly common horror" adding that it "deals squarely with its subject without quite transcending it. 34] In a mixed review, Anupama Chopra praised Padukone's performance but added that the film "hovers dangerously close to becoming a public service announcement. The messaging becomes bigger than the movie, which reduces the impact. 35] Conversely, Sukanya Verma of commended Gulzar for documenting " Chhapaak ' s grim reality barefacedly without losing sight of its character's quiet determination to fight the reasons that make such heinous crimes possible in the first place. 36] Box office [ edit] Chhapaak earned 4. 77 crore at the domestic box office on its opening day. On the second day, the film collected 6. 90 crore. On the third day, the film collected 7. 35 crore, taking total opening weekend collection to 19. 02 crore. [3] As of 31 January 2020, with a net of 39. 35 crore in India and 16. 03 crore overseas, the film has a worldwide gross collection of 55. 38crore. [3] The film has been a commercially successful venture considering it is a critically acclaimed art film. Chhapaak is a Bollywood biographical-drama, helmed by Meghna Gulzar. The movie star Deepika Padukone in lead role alongside, Vikrant Massey. Chhapaak is based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. The film revolves around Malti (Deepika Padukone) who is attacked with acid on a street in New Delhi, in 2005. 'Chhapaak' then takes us on a journey about surviving an acid attack in India, the medico-legal-social state of affairs that transpires after the acid has been hurled and the face is irreparably burnt. Story In Detail Amidst the heavy-duty protests and demonstrations in the Capital to seek justice for a rape victim, an elderly man tries to draw the attention of a media reporter to a passport size photo of a young girl (presumably his...

Chhapaak is a film based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. It stars Deepika Padukone in the lead role while Vikrant Massey plays a crucial supporting role. The film is directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Fox Star Studios in association with Meghna Gulzar and Deepika Padukone. Deepika Padukone plays Malti, whose life turns upside down when a man named Bashir Shaikh (a) Babbu attacks her with acid after she doesn't reciprocate his romantic advances. What follows is a sensitive and accurate depiction of the life of an acid attack survivor. The film mainly banks on Deepika Padukone's spectacular performance, but Meghna Gulzar's writing is not inferior in any way. At no point does she resort to sympathy and shows the survivor in a humanized way. On the other side, we have Vikrant Massey playing the role of Amol, who runs an NGO called Chhapaak to empower acid attack survivors. The way his character is written certainly deserves a special mention. There is a scene where a group of survivors celebrate after achieving a small milestone. Amol asks them to stop, saying the battle against gender-based violence isn't over yet. Malti then tells him that "You're not the one attacked by acid. It's me and these women. We have to decide when to celebrate. "  From that scene onwards, he stops taking decisions on behalf of the women and stands behind them as an ally. Such gems are spread throughout the film, and these tiny, subtle moments sends a strong message to society. The film's issues are mainly with the screenplay. A film like Uyare, which was also about an acid attack survivor, primarily worked because we could see how the lead character started accepting herself. In Chhapaak, the transformation isn't clear because of the non-linear screenplay that keeps moving back and forth. The intention of the maker is right, but the desired effect is slightly diluted. Nevertheless, the film is clean and focused, and there are no subplots as such. The pace is slow, but then that's what a film of this kind needs. The two-hour-long runtime makes sure that the film doesn't tire you, but a longer duration wouldn't have been bad. Take the scene where Malti looks at her face in the mirror for the first time after she's attacked. It's a crucial scene and had to sustain for a few extra seconds, but the film immediately cuts to another scene. This is one film where those extra minutes would have created a deeper impact. On the technical side, the cinematography by Malay Prakash is stunning. He treats the frames with a lot of care and at no point do you feel uneasy. Shankar Ehsaan Loy's background score supports the film's needs but the Title Track song works even better. It's almost like the film's message is completely summarized into a five-minute song. Chhapaak is crafted with a lot of dignity, and Meghna Gulzar weaves her magic again. Verdict: Deepika's astonishing performance and Meghna Gulzar's craft makes Chhapaak a must watch.

Chhapaak Movie Synopsis CHHAPAAK is the story of an acid attack survivor. The year is 2005. Malti (Deepika Padukone) is a 19 year old girl who gets attacked by acid on a street in Delhi. A good Samaritan takes her to the hospital. Her face is irreparably burnt, with no chance of it CHHAPAAK is the story of an acid attack survivor. Her face is irreparably burnt, with no chance of it getting back to its original form. Malti however is determined to get the perpetrator behind the bars. Despite difficulty in speaking at the time of the tragedy, she manages to tell the cops that the attacker is Babban Shaikh aka Babbu (Vishal Dahiya) and her sister Parveen. The cops arrest both and Babbu confesses that he indeed got the acid thrown on Malti. Shockingly, Babbu was a family friend of Malti's and even made the rounds of the hospital to visit her, post the attack. In the court, Maltis lawyer Archana Bajaj (Madhurjeet Sarghi) gives a tough fight but Babbu manages to seek bail on some grounds or the other. Archana stresses on maximum punishment though the law is not clear on acid attacks specifically. This prompts Malti to also file a PIL, asking for ban on the easy availability of acids. What happens next forms the rest of the film. Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone expressed solidarity with students injured on the intervening night of January 5-6 during violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU. Padukones visit to the campus irked a section of individuals who, since last night, made #BoycottChhapaak one of the top trends on Twitter. ‘Chhapaak is Padukones upcoming film inspired by the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Aggarwal who was attacked by 32-year-old Naeem Khan in 2005. In the latest round of backlash, a section of the media has claimed that the movie portrays Khan as ‘Rajesh. Based on an IMDB link which identifies the screen name of one cast members as ‘Rajesh, Swarajya   published an article claiming, “the accused is said to have been named ‘Rajesh in Deepikas movie. ” Update:  News18  published an article on January 8 titled,  “ Deepika Padukones Chhapaak Trends on Twitter Over ‘Change in Acid Attackers Name. ” India TV and The Quint   republished an  IANS  feed and Jansatta   published an independent report alleging the same. India TV  anchor Sushant Sinha repeated the claim during a broadcast on Deepika Padukones visit to JNU. On January 9, News18  added a new ‘twist to the story based on a tweet by advocate Ishkaran Singh Bhandari. The media outlet claimed that the makers of the film ‘rectified their error and changed the name of the villain after social media criticism. Opindias  Nupur Sharma tweeted,  “If secularism means changing “Nadeem” to “Rajesh”, set secularism on fire. ” Latestly and News Nation published similar reports. BJP OFFICE-BEARERS ALLEGE THE SAME BJP Haryana IT cell head Arun Yadav tweeted a photograph of Aggarwal and wrote, “This is Laxmi Aggarwal. Chhapaak is based on her. In 2005, a man named Nadeem Khan threw acid on her in Delhis Khan Market. To keep the fabric of secularism intact, our Bollywood has named Nadeem ‘Rajesh in the film. NameItLikeBollywood] National media in-charge of J&K BJP youth wing BJYM Rohit Chahal alleged the same. “ जिस लक्ष्मी अग्रवाल पर दीपिका की फिल्म बनी है, असल जींदगी में उसपर एसिड फेंकने वाले का नाम नदीम खान था। लेकिन दीपिका की फ़िल्म में एसिड फेंकने वाले का नाम राजेश रख दिया गया है। रशीद, रईस या रहमान जैसा कुछ क्यों नहीं. ShameOnBollywood, ” he tweeted.  Advocate Ishkaran Singh Bhandari tweeted,  “If a different name is used & especially a name typically used by different religions will send a Legal Notice. ” Referring to Bhadaris tweet, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy wrote,  “…if they have changed name of accused from Muslim in real life to a Hindu name. That is defamation. ” FALSE CLAIM Alt News contacted Newslaundry co-founder Abhinandan Sekhri who had attended the screening of ‘Chhapaak in Delhi. “I watched the special screening of the movie which was organised for acid attack survivors, and the claim on social media that the accused is portrayed as belonging to the Hindu community is false. The person who is convicted is presented as belonging to the Muslim community, and so are his relatives, with one of them shown in a Burkha, ”  he said. Sekhri also called-out  Swarajyas  erroneous report on Twitter. Shocking (or maybe not) that such demonstrable misinformation is carried. I watched the screening last night & can tell you with certainty the religion of attacker has not changed. Film has remained accurate to the case. Opinidia ko bachane ke chakkar mein khud Opindia ban gaye... — Abhinandan Sekhri ( AbhinandanSekhr) January 8, 2020 According to PTI journalist Radhika Sharmas report,  “In the Meghna Gulzar directed film, there is no mention of any Nadeem or Naeem Khan. Moreover, Rajesh is the name of Maltis boyfriend. ” #Chhapaak trends on Twitter – and no its screen villain is neither ‘Nadeem nor ‘Rajesh. Unlike the #FakeNews peddlers, I was fortunate to watch a special screening of the film last evening. Here goes, my report for @PTI_News. — Radhika Sharma ( KhayalaBibi) January 8, 2020 “The screening was organised by NCW. The person convicted for the acid attack is known as Bashir Khan urf Babboo in the film, whereas Rajesh is the name of the boyfriend of the acid attack survivor, Malti, ” Sharma informed Alt News. The journalist covered the movies screening for PTI.  A  Times Now  broadcast also debunked the false claim. AN ORGANISED ATTEMPT The usual suspects Prashant Patel Umrao, Shefali Vaidya, author Ravi Rai, Anuj Bajpai and @Nationalist_Om suggested that the Muslim identity of Laxmi Aggarwals perpetrator has been whitewashed in ‘Chhapaak. Sonam Mahajan whose tweet drew over 7, 000 retweets at the time of writing this article wrote, “If crime has no religion, then why does Bollywood feel the need to change the religion of perpetrators even in biopics? ”  Mahajan was one of the earliest to float the false claim. Rohit Jaiswal who identifies himself as a ‘film critic questioned,  “If Acid attacker name was Naeem Khan then the same name should have been used in film as well… Ye Rajesh kya hai? ” One Monica ( TrulyMonica) who terms herself an ‘ex-journalist on Twitter, also circulated the false claim. Vikas Pandey ( MODIfiedvikas) tweeted “I knew this” and claimed that the attackers name was changed to ‘Rajesh. He later took down the tweet. It is noteworthy Swarjaya  later updated its report with the correct information, although clarification on its tweet – “The main accused in Lakshmis acid case was Naeem Khan but he is said to have been named “Rajesh” in Deepikas movie” – is yet to be provided. Furthermore, Free Press Journal   carried a misleading report titled, “#NameItLikeBollywood trends after Deepikas ‘Chhapaak ‘changes acid attackers name from Nadeem Khan to Rajesh”. The article clarifies the misinformation only in the concluding paragraph. ‘Chhapaak is set to release on January 10, 2020, and the claim that movie whitewashes the Muslim identity of the attacker who threw acid on Laxmi Aggarwal, by portraying him as a Hindu, was found to be false. [Update: Swarajya deleted its tweet after this report was published. Vikas Pandeys tweet and erroneous reposts published by News18, Inda TV and Jansatta have been added to the fact-check. Really looking forward to this live-action remake. Love the determination, selflessness, epic-ness, and beauty, along with other traditional Chinese qualities, portrayed in the trailer! It seems to have fixed what I did not like Disney's original animated Mulan, especially the second film. the animated version forced what is often regarded as Disney princess qualities (not very competent on her own, needs a man to rescue) into what should be an inspiring, strong, determined, feminist female character. Moreover, it replaced the traditional Chinese virtues in Mulan with these Disney princess qualities. Really love the loyal, brave, true written on the sword. along with filial piety and discipline, these were the most important traditional virtues, and the virtues that empowered Mulan to do what she did.

Undst everyone vould like to get in zee oven yah. I fell in love with this song at the first whistle. My grandma had a Grimms book!
